FAQ 3 – I know what God’s Word says BUT how do I get it to work for me?

Question: I know what God’s Word says but how do I get it to work for me?

Answer: Let me begin by first asking you a question:

Do you see yourself with your breakthrough or without it?

When my husband was first diagnosed as ‘sterile’ I believed, received and conceived, the diagnosis of the doctors’ words, ‘that we would never have a child of our own’. My natural circumstances were more real to me than God and His healing power. I would beg, plead and cry out for God’s help but I could see no way out of my situation. I saw Shaun and myself as a childless couple and every baby, or pregnant woman was just a painful reminder of what I did not have. The more I focused on the natural circumstances, the more hopeless my situation would become – in my thinking!

I thank God that this was short lived!

Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. Exodus 23:25-26 (NIV)

When I discovered this truth, it became a shot of life to me BUT my circumstances did not change. In fact, they appeared to grow worse. I did not know how to cross the line to see that truth become reality in my life. So I was constantly being torn between the natural circumstances and the truth of what God’s Word said.

I believe that time spent with the Lord, learning how to hear His voice and how to be led by Him was the major key in my breakthrough. He showed me that I had to learn to walk by faith (by what His Word said) and not by sight (by what my circumstances said) to remain in a place of rest. It was difficult at first because up until that point I had only ever known how to walk by my feelings, emotions or by what my 5 natural senses were telling me. I had to keep God’s Word close to my heart because my natural thinking and analyzing would always get the better of me. I had to meditate (study, ponder, utter, mutter) on God’s truth and make the decision to act on it regardless of how I felt and what my circumstances were screaming at me. Soon God’s truth became more real to me than my natural circumstances. I found that all the begging, pleading, striving and desperation left! I began to see myself with my victory (my baby) rather than without it (them). What was happening to others no longer affected me because I knew God’s will for my own family. I was also able to stop allowing what was happening each month in the natural (no positive pregnancy test) from stealing my joy. And praise God my natural circumstances soon lined up with what I saw through the eyes of faith and I conceived my first miracle baby. Shaun’s doctor did not believe it! He said that it was not Shaun’s baby! But praise God all 4 of my miracle children are the image of their father!

You may not be after a miracle baby, but what other “baby” do you need to conceive? Do you need to conceive healing, a financial or business breakthrough, or do you need victory over fear, depression, discouragement or something else along these lines? It does not matter what “baby” you need to conceive, it all begins the same way – when you conceive a truth in God’s Word and you start to see yourself with the “baby” (your breakthrough) rather than without them!

When you know what God’s Word says regarding your situation, spend time in that truth, allowing it to transform the way you think and the way you see your natural circumstances. Then walk by what that truth says and not by the natural realm. Your natural circumstances may grow worse but don’t let go of the truth! I’m not talking about denying what is happening but there are times when we need to walk by God’s truth in spite of it!

Remember that God’s Word is like a seed and it can take time for a seed to begin to develop roots, grow and bear fruit. This is why I encourage you not to let what is happening on the surface to distract you. There are no short cuts or quick fixes. Give God’s Word time to transform your thinking so that what His Word says becomes more real to you than what you are facing in the natural. Keep fixing your eyes on Jesus – on who He is and on what He has already done for you. He alone is the author and perfecter of your faith.
